About the Artist
Ilya is a California-based contemporary painter whose work explores expressive figurative painting, psychological tension, and the intersection of digital culture with traditional media. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Illustration from the Academy of Art University in 2012 and incorporates a strong foundation of visceral materiality-driven compositions.
His work moves away from strict realism, prioritizing "painterly violence" and atmospheric distortion to capture memory instability. He exhibits frequently across the San Francisco Bay Area, maintaining professional associations with prominent galleries. In addition to his recent solo exhibition "The Fugue State" at Ryan Graff Contemporary (2023–2024), his notable past shows include his solo exhibition "Patient" at Hang Art Gallery. As an active art instructor, he continually mentors emerging artists while expanding his own rigorous approach to contemporary figurative art.
