Born Gemma Annick Edmonde Harbulot on March 23, 1937 in Nouméa, Gemmanick is a Neo-Caledonian symbolist painter of Irish origin. Coming from two prominent pioneer families of the territory, she grows up between New Caledonia and the New Hebrides. Very early, at twelve, she discovers painting, first inspired by Pacific landscapes and the mining world where her family worked.
In 1963, the disappearance of her brother marks a decisive turning point: she abandons realism to create a personal pictorial language that she calls Nuances, a sensitive, spiritual, and vibrant universe. Her first exhibitions in Nouméa, notably in 1965 and 1969, meet with dazzling success.
spotted by Seiji Tōgō, a member of the Tokyo Academy of Fine Arts, she exhibits in 1971 at Nichido Gallery on the Ginza. In 1973, her canvas Aquarescence wins the grand prize at the Nika Kai salon. On Tōgō’s advice, she settles in Paris in 1975, where she exhibits at the Galerie Vendôme; David de Rothschild purchases one of her works there.
In 1977, her work Carnaval sous la mer becomes an Aubusson tapestry, making her the first overseas artist woven into Aubusson. The work would even be reproduced on a stamp in 1978. She then pursues an international career, exhibiting in France, Belgium, Switzerland, Luxembourg, and Germany.
