I met Marc Chagall in 1957, in Vence, at the request of Christian Zervos, for his Cahiers d’Art magazine. Chagall welcomed me in an impersonal villa... Only one Chagall-like tree caught my eye: it was against this tree that I asked him to stand. After that, I had to employ all sorts of artifices to prevent him from taking poses he thought advantageous.
Finally, he returned to being what I thought was the real Chagall.

Je rencontrai Marc Chagall en 1957, à Vence, sur la demande de 
Christian Zervos, pour sa revue Cahiers d’Art. Chagall 
m’a reçue dans une villa impersonnelle…Seul un arbre chagallien a 
attiré mon regard : c’est contre cet arbre que je lui ai demandé 
de se placer. Après, il m’a fallu toute sorte d’artifices pour 
l’empêcher de prendre des poses qu’il croyait avantageuses.
Enfin, il est redevenu ce que je pensais être le vrai Chagall.
