La Sainte Bible, a single French-language volume bound in half leather published by SN around 1800, 551 pages, with mixed condition including wear to the binding and about 20 pages missing at the end, and numerous black engravings inside.
Description from the seller
Rarest edition traditionally attributed to various inspired authors and gathered in its canonical form, which constitutes the foundational text of Judaism and Christianity, bringing together a set of sacred books that recount the creation of the world, the history of the people of Israel, the prophetic teachings, the life and doctrine of Jesus Christ -
The text is organized into two main parts, the Old Testament, which traces the foundational narratives, the laws, the historical accounts and the sapiential writings of the Hebrew people, and the New Testament, focused on the figure of Jesus, his preaching, his death and resurrection, as well as the spread of Christianity through the early Christian communities -
The set of biblical books develops major themes such as faith, obedience to God, morality, justice, salvation and hope, using various literary forms ranging from historical narrative to poetry, including prophecy and epistles -
SN - La Sainte Bible - SD (Circa 1800) -
Condition of the binding: good condition, the work in its half-leather period, with stains and wear from use, defects on boards and spine, headbands, corners and joints worn, boards worn, notably the top edge chipped by about 2 cm, smooth decorated spine, gilt lettering -
Interior condition: average, some stains, however the main defect is that the upper margin of the pages has been quite heavily trimmed at the start and then it tapers, pretty headings in the form of illustrations, the work enriched with a very large number of black engravings in the text, about 20 pages likely missing at the end of the work -
