Description from the seller
Pair of sculptures, “Solomonic Columns” carvings, carved, gilded and polychromed wood, 18th century – Spain
Material: Carved, gilded and polychromed wood
Period: 18th century
Country of origin: Spain
Good condition for their age and use
Dimensions: 100 x 18 x 18 cm.
Magnificent pair of Solomonic columns belonging to the decorative framework of a Baroque altarpiece from the 18th century. These pieces would originally be attached to the altarpiece structure, which is why their ornamentation concentrates on the visible face; on the back face you can see the carved wood, bare, without gold and barely polychromed.
The Solomonic columns twist about their own axis with a serpentine form. Their entire surface is decorated with gold vegetal motifs on a red background and the spiraled shafting in a deep green. They are topped by an intricate Corinthian capital, filled with delicate acanthus leaves that curl outward. The gilding technique with gold leaf stands out for its quality.
Solomonic columns are a type of architectural column characterized by their helicoidal, screw-like shape, decorated with vegetal motifs. This architectural style originated in 16th-century Italy and became popular in the 17th and 18th centuries in Europe and Latin America.
The shipment of the product will be paid for by the buyer according to the dimensions, weight and destination. We will contact you to arrange it and agree on the budget. DUE TO THE PIECES’ DIMENSIONS, IT IS PREFERRED TO ARRANGE SHIPPING WITH THE BUYER. CURRENT COSTS ARE ESTIMATED.
The buyer will be responsible for paying import duties and related taxes in the destination country, if any. Please note the seller’s limitation of liability regarding possible customs charges, as they are paid in the destination country and the amount to be paid is determined by that country’s customs authority. If an export permit is required, the costs are borne by the buyer. The cost progressively depends on the value of the work to be exported.
