Turtles, including pond turtles and tortoises or chelonians (order: Testudines), are among the most endangered species on the planet. For centuries, the larger species have been hunted and traded for their shells, flesh, and eggs. In Southeast Asia, the size of these ancient creatures ranges from small, elusive swamp turtles that hide in muddy forest floors to huge sea turtles up to 2 meters in length that navigate around the globe.

Today there are about 300 chelonian species, of which about 80 are in Southeast Asia.
