Biography
Helmut Newton (1920–2004) was one of the most important fashion and portrait photographers of the 20th century. Born in Berlin, after his emigration he worked in Paris, Monaco and Los Angeles for international magazines such as Vogue, Vanity Fair and Elle. With his uncompromising, erotically charged visual language, he shaped the visual culture of luxury fashion like hardly any other photographer of his time.
Newton photographed for Chanel and Hermès among others and thereby created visual worlds that stage elegance, power and sensuality. His unmistakable style – cool, staged and at the same time provocative – influenced the aesthetics of other luxury brands such as Louis Vuitton and Patek Philippe, which to this day embody similar values of exclusivity and perfection.
His works are today represented in the world's most important museums and collections and are among the most valuable items of contemporary photography. Helmut Newton remains a synonym for luxury, femininity and the art of staging.
