Moko (raindrum) from Alor Island, Indonesia, made of brass, original/official from the late 20th century, with dimensions 21 × 20 × 20 cm, weight 1.387 kg, in good condition, provenance private collection.
Description from the seller
Moko are bronze kettledrums(also called raindrums) from Alor Island, Indonesia. While they have been found in several different locations in Indonesia, they are most famously associated with the island of Alor, where they have long been prized in ceremonial exchanges.
Moko remain important symbols of status and are particularly important is their ritual value. Moko are still generally required as part of the bridal dowry, though the short supply of moko today means that moko must often be borrowed or mortgaged for this purpose.
On Bali, the moko is regarded more as a totem and is displayed on pedestals and in temples. On Adonara, on the other hand, it is seen as a symbol of fertility; they are brought out for the harvest and offerings are made. On both islands, mokos are considered sacred, and they may not be touched casually. Mokos are said not only to be imbued with a soul but also to be able to move independently.
Dimensions: 21 x 20 x 20 cm Some scratches, bents and dings are prresent according to it's age... the patina of the old brass is amazing!
