Natali Wood (Spain, 1978)
Pear (Prunus) – Black ink engraving on rice paper
Original print by the Spanish artist Natali Wood, created through an artisanal engraving process from a wooden matrix treated with the Japanese technique Yakisugi (Shou Sugi Ban).
In this process the surface of the wood is slightly charred with flame, which allows the natural grain structure to be revealed and accentuated. The matrix is then inked by hand and printed onto delicate rice paper, capturing the organic texture of the wood with great depth and contrast. This traditional Japanese technique, historically used to treat wood, provides a very particular aesthetic where material and time are visible in the final image.
The result is a visually powerful composition in black charcoal ink, where the form of the tree emerges from the wood’s real grain. The work reflects Natali Wood’s interest in manual processes, nature, and the transformation of natural materials into artistic language.
Each impression presents slight variations inherent to the manual printing process, which gives each copy in the edition a unique character.
The small irregularities inherent to rice paper and to the manual printing process are part of the artisanal character of the work.
