Rare first edition of Psyche by Louis Couperus, published by L.J. Veen in Amsterdam in 1898. The book appeared in a print run of only 2,500 copies.

The iconic cover design is by the well-known Dutch Symbolist artist Jan Toorop — a cream-colored linen binding with a black Art Nouveau illustration of a winged figure. This is the original first binding, as described in the bibliography of Couperus collectors.

The contents are complete (192 pages, last text page 178) and in good condition. The binding shows light signs of wear on the corners and spine, appropriate to its age of more than 125 years.
