Description from the seller
Title: Terrace on Lemons and the Sea
Alfredo Grimaldi
Oil on panel, 24 × 30 cm
This lively and luminous composition captures one of the most iconic panoramas of the Amalfi Coast, probably the view of Positano or a nearby village, observed from a high, flowering vantage point.
The work unfolds on a classical yet extremely dynamic layout: in the foreground, a terrace or balcony opens directly onto the sea, bounded by a white balustrade upon which rest two large terracotta pots full of lush blossoms. On the left, a profusion of intense pink roses dominates, almost fleshy, climbing and blooming generously; on the right, a bouquet of red and pink flowers more vibrant completes the floral frame. Above them, a branch of lemons heavy with golden yellow fruits intrudes boldly into the visual field, with bright green leaves that glow with light and create a natural upper “curtain.”
In the center of the scene, the gulf opens up: the sea is rendered in a deep, vibrant blue, streaked with white brushstrokes suggesting the movement of waves and the wake of sailing boats. The coastline gently curves, revealing a picturesque cluster of white, pink, and ochre houses with characteristic red roofs, clinging to the mountainside with the verticality typical of Amalfi borghi. The dwellings seem to emerge from lush vegetation, a triumph of greens, yellows, and touches of purple that envelope the walls and terraces.
In the distance, the mountains stand out in shades of blue and violet, while the summer sky, a bright blue, is animated by white, soft clouds that give depth and breath to the composition. The light is warm and Mediterranean, typical of noon, and bathes every element with a tactile brightness.
Grimaldi’s style is characterized by generous, material, joyful painting: color is applied with decisive, impasto strokes, which do not seek photographic detail but the emotional vibration of light and nature. The contrasts between the vivid pinks of the flowers, the solar yellow of the lemons, the cobalt blue of the sea, and the white of the houses create a lively and optimistic chromatic harmony, typical of the best Mediterranean Post-Impressionist tradition.
