Description from the seller
Very rare edition of the Goojratee Punchopakhyan, printed in Bombay (today Mumbai) in 1840.
Book details
The volume is a translation into Gujarati (indicated in the text as "Goojratee") of the Panchatantra, a famous collection of Indian animal fables originally written in Sanskrit.
Title: Punchopakhyan (a transliteration variant of Panchatantra).
Publisher: It was published by the Bombay Native Education Society. This society, founded in 1822 by figures such as Jagannath Shankarseth, aimed to promote education among the local population and provide teaching materials in vernacular languages.
Lithography: The volume was "lithographed for the Society" by A. Viegas. Lithography was an innovative printing technique for the time in India, often used to produce texts in local languages with non-Latin characters.
Historical context
This edition dates from the period when formal education in India was under British influence, but there was still a strong commitment to preserve and disseminate Indian classics in the languages spoken by the people. The records of this society are now regarded as extremely rare and are preserved in a few selected libraries, such as the British Library or the Bombay University Library.
