Léon Gaud, born in Versoix in 1844 and died in Les Eaux-Vives (Geneva) in 1908, is a Swiss painter active between the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th. A pupil of Barthélemy Menn in Geneva, a central figure of the Genevan school, he trained in a high-level artistic environment and participated, under his master’s guidance, in the decoration of the Knights’ Hall of Gruyères Castle, where he came into contact with artists such as Camille Corot.
From 1862 he exhibited regularly at Geneva art events and in 1902 succeeded Menn as director of the School of Fine Arts of Geneva. His career was crowned in 1900 with a silver medal at the Paris Universal Exposition.
His production focuses mainly on intimate landscapes and rustic scenes, often set in the surroundings of Lake Geneva. His works reflect a poetic sensibility and a humanist view of rural life, with a painting language close to the Barbizon tradition and to French naturalism.
The present painting depicts a scene of peasant life animated by figures and poultry around a building. The composition is built with a free and vibrant brushstroke, where forms emerge through warm and harmonious color contrasts. The intimate atmosphere and the golden light give the work a particularly evocative character.
The work mounted in a decorative frame in style.
Good overall condition, with light signs of time consistent with the support.
