Description from the seller
Early painting by the artist Ger Lataster. It is an oil on canvas measuring 60.5 x 95 cm. The painting is signed bottom right.
Provenance: Galerie Orez, The Hague (1960s) later part of the Den Harder collection, Rotterdam
Ger Lataster
Ger Lataster (Schaesberg, February 16, 1920) can be regarded as one of the abstract expressionists. After his studies at the Academy of Industrial Arts in Maastricht, he then studied at the Rijksacademie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam.
Lataster is capable of applying abstract expressionism to the extreme. By using contrasting elements, techniques and materials he manages to surprise the viewer time and again. Because Lataster applies these techniques consistently, his artworks come across as reliable, no matter how large the changes in recent years have been.
Known works by Lataster include the painting 'Spelende kinderen' — made in 1954, commissioned by the municipality of Heerlen — and the monumental ceiling painting for the Mauritshuis in The Hague, Icarus Atlanticus, 1987-1988. Lataster is one of the most successful Dutch artists of his generation.
