A mint-condition Japanese Mino ware matcha bowl (chawan) with a tricolor sansai glaze and a raised double-ring motif, measuring 8.2 cm high and 13 cm in diameter, unsigned, from Japan, circa 2000–2010, without a box.
Description from the seller
Item Description
A boldly expressive Japanese matcha tea bowl (chawan) in the Mino ware (Mino-yaki) tradition, decorated in a vivid tricolour (sansai) glaze with a striking raised double-ring (wa) motif in relief.
This is a tea bowl that commands attention.
The cylindrical body — slightly squared at the rim in the manner of Oribe ware — is enveloped in a dramatic composition of horizontal bands and washes: deep cobalt blue, golden yellow, dusty crimson, and charcoal black, all pooling and overlapping freely against each other in a manner that recalls both abstract expressionist painting and the ancient three-colour lead glazes of Tang dynasty China.
The overall visual effect is intense and contemporary, yet rooted in the centuries-old Mino tradition of bold, uninhibited decoration.
The centrepiece of the decoration is a large raised double-ring motif — two interlocking circular forms built up from the clay surface, their ridged white clay contrasting with the coloured glaze grounds around them.
The rings appear simultaneously as an abstract symbol and as an en (縁 / circle-of-connection) motif — a reference found across Japanese ceramic arts — giving the piece a quiet philosophical resonance beneath its exuberant exterior.
The interior is finished in a cool, layered grey-white glaze with visible throwing rings, offering a calm, meditative surface that complements the drama of the exterior.
The foot (kodai) is unglazed, revealing a sandy warm-toned clay body.
No maker's signature or seal is visible; the artist is unknown.

Artist Profile
This bowl is an unsigned work in the Mino ware tradition.
Mino ware (Mino-yaki), produced in the Tono region of Gifu Prefecture, is Japan's largest and most historically significant ceramic tradition.
It encompasses the celebrated Oribe, Shino, Kiseto, and Setoguro styles of the Momoyama period (late 16th – early 17th century), each characterised by a spirit of bold experimentation, asymmetry, and the deliberate rejection of conventional "beauty."
The tricolour glaze palette and raised decorative motif seen in this bowl are in direct dialogue with the Oribe tradition — named after the tea master Furuta Oribe — which embraced unexpected colour combinations, irregular forms, and graphic surface decoration as expressions of wabi aesthetic freedom.
Though the maker of this specific piece is unidentified, the work exemplifies the living vitality of Mino's ceramic heritage.
