Description from the seller
Frédéric Barzilay
(1917–2015)
Abstract composition
Mixed technique with matter on rigid support
Signed and dated 1962 at the bottom right
Dimensions of the work: 28 x 25 cm
Dimensions with frame: 41 x 39 cm
Important abstract matter work created in 1962 by Frédéric Barzilay, an artist active in the context of Swiss abstract and informal painting in the post-war period. The composition unfolds through a sober yet vibrant surface, built through successive layers of painterly matter, with thicknesses, cracks and reliefs that give the work a strong plastic presence.
At the center a blue‑gray chromatic mass emerges, dense and cracked, interacting with bright yellow accents and lighter, more diffuse interventions, creating a dynamic balance between gesture, material and color. The language is fully traceable to informal research, in which matter becomes the protagonist and the painting process is visible and intentionally expressive.
The work is signed “F. Barzilay” and dated “62” on the lower right. It is presented in its original frame with a fabric passe-partout, on the back of which the label of Fabrique de cadres – Galerie d’art Fred Chédel, Genève is applied, evidence of high‑quality framing in the Swiss context. On the back there are also handwritten notes relating to the dimensions of the work and the support.
Condition: good. The surface shows reliefs, cracks and intentional irregularities, coherent with the matter technique and with the informal language of the artist. Frame with normal signs of wear.
Shipping / collection:
Careful packaging and trackable shipping. Postal shipping is the most economical solution but not the most suitable for works with a matter surface; every effort will be made to ensure adequate protection, without assuming responsibility for possible damage during transport. Insurance available on request, with costs borne by the purchaser. Any duties and customs charges are borne by the purchaser (delays and possible costs also for shipments within Europe, shipping from Switzerland).
Photos constitute an integral part of the description.
Happy bidding.
