【Product details】
This refined framed lacquer panel titled “Peony” is the work of Shinbo Yusai, a master of carved lacquer (choshitsu) from the Echizen lacquerware tradition in Fukui Prefecture. The composition presents a large white peony emerging vividly against a deep black lacquer ground, creating a striking contrast that highlights both elegance and depth.
The design is executed using the carved lacquer technique, in which multiple layers of lacquer are applied and then meticulously carved away. This process allows for remarkable dimensionality, visible in the sculptural modelling of each petal and the finely detailed veins of the leaves. The result is a highly tactile surface with a strong sense of movement and lifelike presence.
The peony is a traditional symbol of wealth, honour, and beauty in Japanese art, often associated with refinement and prosperity. Its bold, full bloom is particularly suited to lacquer work, where depth and richness of form can be fully expressed.
The work is housed in a wooden frame with a fabric mat, presenting the piece in a balanced and elegant format suitable for display.
Shinbo Yusai (1899–?) was born in Kawada, Sabae City, Fukui Prefecture, a major centre of Echizen lacquerware. He began studying carved lacquer techniques in 1914. In 1933, his work was honoured by imperial viewing and purchase, and he received numerous commissions from imperial family members, including the Higashikuni and Takeda families. His achievements include awards at the Belgium International Exposition and the Chicago World’s Fair, as well as multiple prizes and selections at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry Crafts Exhibitions and the Nitten. He was recognised by the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce as a preserver of traditional arts and received the UNESCO Association Award.
Fair to good vintage condition. There are a few minor scuffs to the lacquer surface. The inner fabric mat shows yellowing, light stains, and small holes. The plywood backing has slight warping. The wooden frame shows minor knocks and surface wear. Please refer to the photos for details.
