Footed stoneware bowl handcrafted by Stig Lindberg in the Gustavsberg Studio workshops. The piece features a hemispherical cup mounted on a flared stem and base. It is covered in a glaze with tones of turquoise and cobalt blue. The interior of the bowl displays an incised pattern of small dots arranged in concentric circles originating from the center, visible beneath the glaze. The top rim and the base of the foot are brown in color.
This piece is a unique work dated 1963, originating from the Gustavsberg Studio (marked with the "G" and the hand from the Gustavsberg Studio).
H: 12.5 cm; D: 19 cm
Stig Lindberg (1916–1982) is one of the most influential and prolific figures in 20th-century Swedish design. Trained at Konstfack in Stockholm, he joined the Gustavsberg factory in 1937, where he became the primary collaborator of Wilhelm Kåge before succeeding him as artistic director in 1949.
Lindberg significantly shaped Scandinavian design with his exceptional versatility, excelling equally in the production of industrial ceramics (the famous Berså tableware range) and in the design of textiles, plastics, glass, and children's book illustrations. At the Gustavsberg Studio, he created unique stoneware pieces that are highly sought after, characterized by bold, often playful or organic forms, and innovative glaze and decorative techniques, as seen here with the incisions.
His work has been honored with numerous international awards and is part of the permanent collections of major museums, including:
Nationalmuseum (Stockholm)
Victoria and Albert Museum (London)
Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York)
Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) (New York)
Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum (New York)
