Description from the seller

Hoffmann Friedrich. Observationum Physico-Chymicarum Selectiorum. Libri III. Venezia apud Sebastianum Coleti, 1740. Beautiful edition of the famous chemical-pharmacological treatise by the eminent German physician, which sets forth his theories in opposition to those of Sylvius and Tachenius. The work gathers a wide range of experiments concerning the composition, distillation, and use of oils, balsams, and resins. Of an alchemical scope are the essays on the nature of gold, of salts and alum, and on medicines derived from them. Finally, some chapters are devoted to the chemical analysis of wines and to the genesis and history of the Tocai wine. Beautiful full parchment binding of the period. Device engraved on the frontispiece. Finals and woodcut initials. Dimensions 23x17, pp. 16nn, 192 (mis-numbered 292). Excellent condition.
