Description from the seller
Acrylic painting, mixed media, gold leaf and varnish on canvas stretched on a wooden frame - Hand-signed - 2026
Work signed Medsan, artist member of Atelier Joconde, known for his reappropriations of cultural icons and bold stylistic fusions.
With this original square-format piece, titled "Kabuki meets a donut," Medsan delivers a resolutely modern and transgressive vision of traditional Japan. This richly textured painting, adorned with real gold leaf, features a classic ukiyo-e figure — a powerful kabuki warrior (yakusha-e) — reimagined with the offbeat attitude of contemporary urban pop culture.
The visual and temporal contrast is striking: at the heart of a dramatic pose (mie), our hero with intense kabuki makeup (kumadori) wields not a sword but a pink glazed donut with sprinkles, marking a pop, humorous rupture with the classical imagery of martial strength. His elaborately designed kimono, with its complex geometric patterns and Edo-period waves, is enriched with delicate gold leaf applied to create precious reflections and unique depth.
The impact of the canvas largely rests on its solid pink, bubblegum background, vibrant and luminous. Worked with acrylic paint, mixed media and gold leaf, the canvas presents beautiful texture effects. This strong, Pop Art-inspired aesthetic explodes the contrasts. In the upper right corner, the signature "Medsan" written in Japanese (katakana) in its cartouche seals this perfect fusion.
A hand-painted piece with extraordinary charisma. It is ideal to bring a colorful, urban, quirky, and decidedly "sweet" touch to a design interior.

About the Atelier:
Atelier Joconde is a collective of artists united around contemporary, living, plural creation. Established as a true artistic production space, the atelier operates both in collective creation and in individual approaches, depending on projects and works. Atelier Joconde is also a family adventure. Le Yack, a contemporary figurative painter, develops a narrative, introspective body of work with cinematic and realistic influences. At his side, Medsan, focused on pop art painting, explores color, modern iconography and visual culture. Finally, Neo Pablo follows a more instinctive search, blending abstract art, brut art and figurative abstraction. Each work is conceived, created and supervised within the atelier, with a shared artistic standard and an identity unique to each artist.
