Description from the seller
The Hollandsche Spectator - Justus van Effen - Amsterdam, K van Tongerlo, 1756 - half-leather bindings - 347; 348-717 pp
Good. Dings and scuffs. Inside pages age-yellowed, some pages browned, here and there a spot, a hole in two leaves. Only a single dog-ear. Stamp on the first free endpaper and on the last page of both parts. Scribble on the title pages.
The title page of the first part is loose, moisture spot in the margin of about forty pages from page 250 to page 347 and moisture spots on the endpapers at the back.
This 2nd part (1st and 2nd portion) contains the reprint of the originally 3rd and 4th parts.
Van Effen became known for his edition of the Hollandsche Spectator, which appeared from August 1731 to April 1735. Although he has a few regular collaborators, most pieces were written by Van Effen himself. He comments on the Dutch spirit, thrift, the cleanliness craze, excessive eating and drinking habits, and provincialism. His style is rationalizing, sober. The famous novella by Van Effen, Kobus and Agnietje, first appeared in the magazine in 1733.
