Louis XV silver table spoon and fork set in .950 silver, Paris, mid-18th century (c.1756–61) by Germain Chayé and Nicholas Ponthier, total weight 152.6 g with spoon 74.9 g and fork 77.7 g, bearing Fermiers Généraux marks and later assurance poinçons, in excellent antique condition with patina.
Description from the seller
Historically significant pair consists of Louis XV silver table spoon and matching table fork, both crafted in Paris in the mid-18th century and bearing the prestigious .950 silver standard.
• Spoon: Maker Germain Chayé, Paris, dated 1760–61 (crowned uppercase “V” date letter). Weight: 74.9 g.
• Fork: Maker Nicholas Ponthier, Paris, dated circa 1756–57 (crowned lowercase “q” date letter). Weight: 77.7 g.
• Total weight: 152.6 g
Both pieces feature the original Fermiers Généraux assay marks from the Ancien Régime, including the Paris charge mark (crowned uppercase “A” on the spoon). They also display a remarkable series of shared later guarantee poinçons (poinçons de garantie) from the post-Revolutionary period:
• Hercule (garantie mark, 1798–1838)
• Vieille Femme (1819–1838)
• Cérès (1819–1838)
The fork additionally shows a Bull’s Head mark (possibly indicating a vermeil treatment or a specific control).
These identical later control marks are the highlight of this pair: they prove that the spoon and fork have travelled together through history, having been re-assayed and re-certified at the same time in the same Parisian workshops during the early 19th century. This shared “poinçon biography” is exceptionally rare for pieces made by different silversmiths several years apart and adds important historical provenance and collector appeal.
Both handles are beautifully engraved on the reverse with matching ornate monograms (floral cartouche with crowned intertwined initials/crest), further reinforcing that they have always formed a pair within the same aristocratic or bourgeois service.
Condition: Excellent antique condition with lovely natural patina, minor surface scratches, and wear consistent with age and use over more than 260 years. No dents, cracks, or repairs. The bowls and tines remain strong and well-shaped. Classic elegant Louis XV style with smooth, refined handles.
A wonderful opportunity for collectors of French 18th-century orfèvrerie, Louis XV silver, or items with documented historical continuity through poinçons. Perfect as a display piece or to complete a period service.
