AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Samuel Sarmiento (1987) is a Venezuelan artist who lives and works in Aruba. In 2010 he earned a master’s degree in artistic production from the Polytechnic University of Valencia, Spain. He has participated in various solo and group exhibitions in the Netherlands, the United States, Spain, Greece, Aruba, Venezuela, Argentina and China. His artistic practice explores the narrative and hermeneutic capacity of contemporary drawing, its connection to Caribbean oral traditions, and learning processes based on orality.

In October 2024 he worked in the guest studio at the Van Gogh House.

‘The concepts of north and south, as well as up and down, are subjective constructions. So coming from an island in the north of South America, I decided to visit the birthplace of the painter Vincent van Gogh, who was born in the south but always lived closer to the sky than the earth. Seeking to understand the landscape and the light, I can define my experience at Van Gogh AiR as a starting point in my work to develop a universal language that uses everyday life to build sacred stories. During this time of creation, I understood Vincent’s importance not only as an artist but also as a human and a living archetype of a person ahead of his time.’

Van Gogh AiR Charity Auction

The Van Gogh House invites artists to come and work for a period of time in Vincent’s birthplace, Zundert. They literally step in Van Gogh’s footsteps here, and that yields remarkable results. The artists donate works that are auctioned for the benefit of the Van Gogh artist-in-residence program.

Beforehand and during the auction period the works are exhibited at the Van Gogh House. You can view the works there and, after the auction, pick them up here as well. You will receive a notification about the auction afterward.
