Icon - Wood

Religious Greco-Orthodox icon painted in tempera on wood depicting Saint George as he slays the dragon. Saint George is depicted as a young knight on a white horse, dressed in armor and a red cloak on a golden background. The saint is piercing with a long spear a dragon that lies at the horse's feet. This scene represents the triumph of good over evil and of Christian faith over darkness. In the background to the right, a fortified city can be seen with figures, probably the castle's royal family observing the scene from the walls. Signed in the lower right as in the photo.

These icons are typical of Byzantine or Greek-Orthodox sacred art and are made with egg tempera on wood panel, with backgrounds in gold leaf.
