A single domino game set dating from the late 19th century to early 20th century, made of ebony wood with a beech box, containing 28 pieces and an original sliding lid, in good condition.
Description from the seller
Beautiful and authentic antique domino game. The set is still completely complete: 28 pieces with an original beech box. The pieces consist of a block of ebony wood, onto which a metal plaque is riveted by two small copper rivets. The pieces are 5 cm long, 2.5 cm wide, and 0.8 cm thick. The set dates from the late 19th century or the early 20th century. The box is missing a rim (see photos).
Also very nice is the original box that opens and closes with a sliding lid. In the box the pieces lie in four rows of seven pieces each. The box is 19.5 cm long, 5.2 cm high, and 6.5 cm deep. Together with the pieces it weighs about 500 g.
The box shows logical signs of use due to the wood’s shrinkage and frequent use, but all these marks belong to the history of the box. The pieces and the box are still completely authentic and have always belonged together.
Very beautiful to see is that the domino tiles and the box are handmade. The spots are not perfectly in place. Through heavy use the bone has developed a nice patina, with the fibers of the bone standing out nicely dark. The set exudes a lifetime of playing in taverns and/or at home tables from the 19th and early 20th centuries.
What is special about these pieces is that the black wood is truly ebony wood, and not black-stained plain wood! It is thus also a luxury edition that would have been quite expensive at the time. The rivets are also neatly level with the bone and the ebony, and not sitting on top of them as is often the case with these sets. Because the pieces are flat, they stack easily.
Domino rules
A game of Domino proceeds as follows. The players receive an equal number of domino tiles that are kept secret from other players. When it is a player's turn, they may lay down a tile somewhere. The number of pips on the touching sides must be the same. If they cannot lay down a tile, they must draw one. Whoever runs out of tiles first wins the domino game.
Not only can you still play the domino game with these pieces, it is also a very beautiful object for a display cabinet. Functional and certainly a conversation piece!
This domino set is carefully packed and insured for shipping.
