Latin post-incunable edition of Manipulus Curatorum by Guido de Monte Rochen, first edition, published by Stephan Balan in Lyon in 1503, leather binding, 14 x 10 cm, 260 pages, religious subject, in good condition.
Description from the seller
DESCRIPTION: I present to you a PRECIOUS POST-INCUNABUL BOOK published in Lyon (France) in the year of Our Lord 1503 and, therefore, 523 years old. The printing date can be found at the end of the book, on folio r2: "...in famosa civitate Lugdu(ni) arte Stephani Balan impressoris. Anno d(omi)ni Milesimo quinge(n)tesimotertio. tertiadecima die mensis februarii" (Printed by Stephan Balan, in the famous city of Lyon, on the thirteenth day of February in the year of Our Lord 1503)
It is the famous "MANIPULUS CURATORUM (Pastor’s Manual)", a work written around 1331 by Guido de Monte Rochen or Guy de Montrocher, a renowned priest and jurist of whom Spain, France and Italy dispute whether he is their fatherland.
Guido de Monte Rochen’s "Manipulus Curatorum" is considered the most important of the medieval pastoral manuals. It is especially important as a key example of the intersection between doctrine and religious practice. The author tries to make comprehensible centuries of theology and canon law for the priest with little knowledge and, in turn, for his parishioners. No other work achieved this so successfully.
This parish priests’ manual was copied frequently, with about 180 complete or partial manuscripts surviving, and later reprinted throughout Europe during the following 200 years, with at least 119 editions and sales estimated to have tripled those of Thomas Aquinas’s Summa Theologica. It became obsolete only when the Council of Trent created the Roman Catechism in 1566, which caused copies to be quickly lost over the centuries, making it today a rare and infrequent work.
Our copy belongs to the very rare edition published by Stephani Balan in Lyon in 1503, of which only one known copy exists in the Cambridge University Library, United Kingdom. Consequently, you bid for the second known copy in the world of this practically disappeared edition. ONLY TWO IN THE WORLD: the Cambridge University one and this, YOURS.
Incunabular and post-incunabular editions of the "Manipulus Curatorum" fetch exorbitant prices on the antiquarian book market, as you can verify for yourself. Currently, there are only 4 incunabular or post-incunabular copies of the "Manipulus Curatorum" for sale in the world, priced between €7,500 for the cheapest and €28,000 for the most expensive. Here, you have it in auction starting at €1 and with a LOW RESERVE PRICE. Will you let it slip away?
