【Product details】
This elegant framed lacquer panel titled “Fox” is a work by Shinbo Yusai (1899–?), a master of carved lacquer from Sabae City in Fukui Prefecture, a renowned centre of Echizen lacquerware. The composition depicts a graceful fox set against a deep black lacquer ground, accompanied by delicate pampas grass, creating a refined and atmospheric scene.
The piece is executed in the traditional choshitsu (carved lacquer) technique. This method involves building up multiple layers of lacquer and then carefully carving into the surface to reveal the design. The result is a finely sculpted image with subtle depth and remarkable precision, particularly visible in the fox’s fur and the flowing lines of the grasses.
Shinbo Yusai was a highly accomplished artist who studied carved lacquer from a young age. His career included the honour of imperial patronage, with works viewed and acquired by the Emperor, as well as commissions from members of the imperial family. He also received numerous awards at international exhibitions, including the Belgium and Chicago World Expositions, and was recognised by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry as a preserver of traditional arts. His achievements reflect both technical mastery and cultural significance within Japanese lacquer art.
In Japanese symbolism, the fox is often associated with intelligence, transformation, and a connection to the spiritual realm, particularly as a messenger figure in folklore. The inclusion of pampas grass further evokes seasonal beauty and elegance.
A paper with the artist’s biography is attached to the reverse, showing some spots due to age. There are minor signs of use overall, and the frame shows some scuffs, with a few small dents along the upper edge. The piece remains in good vintage condition. Please refer to the photos for details.
