Description from the seller

Hand-painted splendid service for 12 people made by Deruta’s master artisans.

The abundance of clay deposits and the favorable position along important land and river routes favored the development of ceramic production in Deruta since the Middle Ages. With continuity, uninterrupted for at least seven centuries, Deruta still represents today the center of the largest production of artistic maiolica in Italy. In this great ceramic cradle there are countless artisan workshops, kilns where new clays were created and tested, new techniques experimented, new shapes designed, new glazes and varnishes tested, new colors employed and new decorations painted.

Each piece of the service is hand-painted by one of Deruta’s artisans and is decorated with grotesques and colorful floral festoons, with great refinement and taste. The dishes feature scalloped rims on the profile. Notably, the footed stands are hand-molded, of extreme refinement.

The service is very large and consists of:
12 flat plates
12 soup plates
12 appetizers or dessert plates
2 stands

The service is in very good overall condition, with minimal flaws due to the artisanal nature of the product. Some plates show a minimal trace of craquelure. The photographs reflect the actual condition of the object and highlight any defects.

An object of great refinement and elegance. Very rare, painted and fully hand-modeled.

Seller's Story

My name is Riccardo, I recently graduated in Art History from the University of Florence and I am passionate about porcelain. From tableware to artist vases, from figurines to tea and coffee sets, I am fascinated by the mastery and the ability of great artisans and designers who shape this so fragile material, turning a raw mass into masterpieces with a story to tell. During my years at university I became interested in the history of 19th- and 20th-century tableware art; today, every day, I work with prestigious porcelain pieces that always have something to say to me and to those who purchase them. Of my work I love that I can discover more about the objects I find as I travel around Italy, always learning something new. I always strive to convey to my clients this passion I have for the objects I sell, certain that each one of them has a story to tell: the story of who created it, the story of who preserved it, and the story of who will give it a new life.
