MEDSAN presents Despair in Edo (江戸の絶望) – Hand signed, vertical 60 × 40 cm Giclée mounted on a wooden panel, editioned 1 of a limited edition, created in 2026 in France.
Description from the seller
Vertical format 60h x 40l cm - Hand-signed - 2026
Signed work by Medsan, a artist member of Atelier Joconde, renowned for bold stylistic fusions and appropriations of classical artworks from art history.
In this intense creation titled "Despair in Edo", Medsan orchestrates a spectacular mashup between European Renaissance (Realism) and feudal Japan (Edo period). He directly adopts the iconic pose from Gustave Courbet's famous self-portrait, "The Desperate Man". The figure, transposed into Ukiyo-e aesthetics, grips his hair with palpable anxiety, eyes wide open, staring at the viewer.
Dressed in indigo traditional clothing, the man stands out against a richly decorated turquoise backdrop featuring stylized wave motifs and flying cranes, creating a fascinating tension between the raw, visceral expression of emotion and the decorative nature of classic prints. The high-quality Giclée print faithfully renders the flatness of the colors and the sharpness of the contours of this edge-less (user-retouched) work.
Note the traditional cartouche in the upper left bearing the signature "Medsan" calligraphed in Japanese characters (katakana) (メドサン).
A psychological, powerful, and graphically impactful piece, ideal for a collector who loves contemporary Pop Art, art history revisited, and Japanese aesthetics.

About Atelier Joconde:
Atelier Joconde is a collective of artists gathered around vibrant, plural contemporary creation. Established as a true hub of artistic production, the workshop operates both in collective creation and individual approaches, depending on the projects and artworks. Atelier Joconde is also a family venture. Le Yack, a contemporary figurative painter, develops a narrative and introspective body of work with cinematic and realist influences. Alongside him, Medsan explores color, modern iconography, and visual culture. Finally, Neo Pablo pursues a more instinctive approach, mixing abstract art, outsider art, and figurative abstraction. Each work is conceived, created, and supervised within the atelier, sharing a common artistic standard and an identity unique to each artist.
Keywords: Courbet, The Desperate Man, Self-Portrait, Despair, Anguish, Japan, Edo, Ukiyo-e, Mashup, Portrait, Pop Art, Crane, Waves, Medsan, Atelier Joconde, Giclée, Limited Edition, Contemporary Art, Vertical Format.
