The composition reprises the tender, fusion-loving pose of the original, but the lovers are here replaced by a majestic fully-armed samurai and a woman wearing an opulent kimono.

The genius of this piece lies in the hybridization of motifs: armors and fabrics teem with Klimt’s characteristic geometric shapes (spirals, rectangles, golden mosaics), which blend harmoniously with waves and traditional Japanese chrysanthemums.
