Description from the seller
Format square 40x40 cm - Hand-signed and numbered - 2026
Artwork signed Medsan, artist member of Atelier Joconde, known for bold stylistic fusions and masterful reinterpretations of art history.
In this striking creation titled "Edo Gothic", Medsan orchestrates a fascinating transcultural mashup. He takes possession of the celebrated masterpiece "American Gothic" by Grant Wood, a true icon of American culture, to transpose it with stunning precision into the traditional aesthetics of Japanese printmaking (Ukiyo-e).
The composition scrupulously reprises the austere and frontal posture of the farmer and his daughter (or wife), but the characters are metamorphosed here. The man wears theatrical Kabuki makeup (kumadori) while retaining the iconic round glasses and the famous three-pronged pitchfork of the original work. He is dressed in a kimono with wave and crane motifs, while the female figure, with the characteristic averted gaze, wears a sumptuous garment adorned with a phoenix. In the background, the famous wooden house with its Gothic-style window (the Dibble House) is subtly reinterpreted to fit the architectural and visual codes of the Edo era.
The work is a high-quality giclée print reproducing the subtle grain of wood engraving and the flat areas of color typical of the genre. The signature "Medsan" is calligraphed in Japanese characters (katakana) in a traditional vertical cartouche located at the top right (メドサン).
A narrative piece, tinged with humor and visually flawless, ideal for a collector who loves reimagined art history, transcultural Pop Art, and the timeless aesthetic of Japan.
Characteristics of the work:
This piece is a very high-quality giclée print, carefully mounted on a wooden frame. Offered in a limited edition and numbered, the artwork adopts a square format of 40x40 cm. It is hand-signed by the artist on the back of the canvas. Its authenticity is guaranteed by an official certificate signed by the artist, given to the purchaser. Shipping is from France, with professional rigid packaging designed to ensure maximum security during transport.
About Atelier Joconde:
Atelier Joconde is a workshop of artists gathered around a living and plural contemporary creation. Located as a true site of artistic production, the studio operates both in collective creation and in individual approaches, depending on projects and works. Atelier Joconde is also a family venture. Le Yack, a contemporary figurative painter, develops a narrative and introspective body of work with cinematic and realistic influences. By his side, Medsan explores color, modern iconography and visual culture. Finally, Neo Pablo pursues a more instinctive search, blending abstract art, art brut and figurative abstraction. Each work is conceived, produced and followed within the studio, with a shared artistic standard and an identity unique to each artist.
