Description from the seller
Paperweight / Briefbeschwerer VSL Val Saint Lambert cranberry
The hand-cut and color-overlaid paperweights from the famous Belgian glassworks Cristalleries du Val Saint-Lambert were usually produced as after-hours pieces by the glass cutters, with only a few designs shown in catalogs and officially marketed.
For example, in the book “Presse-papiers de prestige – Presse-papiers populaires” about VLS paperweights it says: “The glassmakers created the paperweights during their breaks or after work. Then they could give free rein to their imagination, unlike in serial production. Often the cutter enhanced the mass of the colored crystal. So we did small favors for each other. And the superiors turned a blind eye or sometimes stepped in themselves. There are no signatures—except for those we know were made by Charles Graffart; no dates or at most a few assumed or derived ones when two first names intertwine for a marriage, when a name signals retirement. (…) Yet the old Val Saint-Lambert paperweights have not yet received the recognition they deserve for the reasons mentioned above. This is all the more paradoxical as they are becoming rarer. Only the wealthiest museums and the finest private or public collections possess one or another example.”
These crystal objects are therefore unique pieces, produced roughly between 1880 and 1930.
The unusually richly cut paperweight is made of clear crystal with a pinkish (cranberry) overlay. It features four oval side windows and a round top window – edged with radiating engraving along the rim. Between them are star-, diamond-, and rhombus-shaped cut motifs. At the bottom sits a centrally and especially ornate bottom star with 16 points.
