Ruud van Empel, Vincent #1, a signed 65 × 46 cm portrait photograph using the Anders technique, printed in 2020, in Very Fine condition, sold by Galerie.
Description from the seller
Ruud van Empel (1958) has worldwide fame with his fictitious child portraits in paradisiacal environments. His photographic works consist of carefully composed 'computer collages' in which humans and nature are elevated to a new reality that is visually striking and at the same time unsettling.
Van Empel studied in the 1970s at the Academy for Visual Arts Sint Joost in Breda. In the 1980s he began working as a designer for TV programs. He gained an international reputation in 2006 for photographic layout and collage with his series World, Moon and Venus, which he presented in New York. Since then he has exhibited worldwide, including FoMu in Antwerp (BE), MoPA in San Diego (USA), the George Eastman House (USA), the Groninger Museum (NL), the Noordbrabants Museum (NL) and Fotografiska (SE).
Ruud van Empel has reinvented Van Gogh's portrait. Nobody knows exactly what Vincent looked like as an adult. After his 19th year there are, in fact, no portrait photos available. Our idea of his appearance is primarily based on his painted self-portraits, which vary greatly. Van Empel has attempted to reconstruct Van Gogh's portrait based on photos of various 'look-a-likes'. From one he used the nose and ears, from another the eyes and hair. He has arranged the elements over well-known self-portraits of Van Gogh.
The buyer also receives a signed catalog of the exhibition 'Ruud van Empel - Inventing Van Gogh'.
