Item Description
Japanese Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays — 5th Class (旭日双光章 勲五等) | Meiji-Era Decoration | Display-Mounted
This is a genuine Japanese Imperial Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays, 5th Class (旭日双光章, Kyokujitsu Sokkosho), one of Japan's most historically significant state decorations. Established by Emperor Meiji on 10 April 1875 as Japan's very first national order, the Order of the Rising Sun (旭日章, Kyokujitsu-sho) remains among the highest honors bestowed by the Japanese government upon individuals who have rendered distinguished service to the state in fields including diplomacy, culture, science, industry, and public administration.
The badge is an eight-pointed star featuring a central red enamelled sun disc radiating outward — a design representing the vitality and brilliance of the rising sun, a foundational symbol of Japan as the "Land of the Rising Sun." Distinctive to the 5th Class, four of the eight points are finished in gilt and four in silver, with each point comprising three white-enamelled rays — a design that distinguishes it from the all-gilt 4th Class and all-silver 6th Class. The badge is suspended from three green-enamelled paulownia leaves (桐葉), the traditional emblem of the Japanese Imperial household, on a white ribbon with red border stripes.
The piece is presented on a custom navy blue velvet-covered sponge display board with a wooden backing, measuring 15.5 cm × 42 cm — clearly intended for wall display or exhibition. A gold chrysanthemum crest (菊紋) is affixed at the top of the display board. The badge itself is in very fine condition with excellent enamel retention and strong detail.
No miniature or service ribbon (略綬) is included. No certificate of award (賞状) accompanies this piece.
