Description from the seller
Metal sculpture by Giovanni Varlese depicting Pescatorello from the early 1900s. Statue of the 'Pescatorello', a metal work signed by Giovanni Varlese 1888 – 1922 Naples. The artist belongs to the line of the famous Neapolitan school of sculptors who, around the turn of the 1900s, distinguished themselves for great skill and creativity. In this school the master to whom Varlese was aligned was Vincenzo Gemito 1852 – 1929. Of humble origins he became an artist of international fame, renowned for his portrait of Verdi and famous for the sculptures of the Fisherman and the Fisherman-boy, which became a classic of Neapolitan sculpture. In good condition.
This noteworthy, sizable piece is ready to enrich any environment; you can place it on a bookshelf, a column, or in an entrance, thanks to its dimensions it does not fear standing alone, enriching any space it occupies.
Well finished, rich in details as only the skilled hands of artisans of a bygone era could craft. This work belongs to a small private collection of my grandfather’s, and since I am not a professional antiquarian I cannot guarantee that it is 100% bronze, but the patina, the green visible in the cavities, the weight, and the clinking seem to indicate as much. In any case it is presented as metal. It is mounted on Carrara marble; in some photos it is not visible because I had to remove the background.
In good condition with slight signs of time given its age. The piece itself measures 40 cm, and with the fishing rod it reaches 50 cm in height. Photos taken with a mobile phone do not convey the true beauty of the work.
I guarantee careful and trackable shipping.
