Description from the seller

Gold mirror in the Luigi Filippo style – mid-19th century (circa 1840–1860)

Elegant antique mirror, attributable to a French area, dating from the mid-19th century, featuring a carved wooden frame gilded with gold leaf, enriched with decorative engravings of notable finesse.

The line is typical of the Luigi Filippo taste, with a wavy silhouette and a richly sculpted crown with floral motifs and a central ribbon, elements that give the piece a scenographic, timeless elegance.

Main characteristics
• Era: mid-19th century, circa 1840–1860
• Origin: French area (stylistic attribution)
• Materials: carved wood and gold leaf gilding, antique glass
• Style: Luigi Filippo with romantic decorative influences

Dimensions
• Overall height: 128 cm
• Overall width: 77 cm
• Thickness: 3.5 cm
• Internal mirror: 91 x 60 cm
• Height of upper decorative element: 29 cm

Analysis and authenticity

The frame carries original gilding with geometric and floral motifs carved by hand, visible along the uprights and at the top. The patina and signs of aging are consistent with the age and contribute to the object's historic charm.

The glass appears contemporaneous with the frame and shows slight oxidations and internal veiling (foxing), with thin darkened areas typical of aging of the reflective layer. In particular, these phenomena are localized in three small points, as documented in the photographs, while the rest of the reflective surface is in very good condition with high readability.

These features are compatible with antique glasses and early silvering techniques, sometimes also associated with mercury work.

Along the entire perimeter there is a band about 2 cm wide with a different refraction, due to hand grinding of the edge. This finishing, typical of antique productions, creates slight optical variations and a not perfectly uniform reflection, elements that constitute an important mark of authenticity and should not be considered defects.

The back preserves an old fabric covering with floral patterns, with visible weave and wear consistent with age (abrasions, discolorations, and signs of time), a significant element suggesting the absence of invasive modern interventions.

The wooden structure, fixing systems, and construction details are consistent with an eighteenth/nineteenth-century production.

Condition

Excellent state of preservation for its age.
• Original patina well preserved
• Gilding with light signs of time, consistent with age
• Antique glass in very good condition, with slight localized oxidations visible at three points
• Overall legible reflective surface
• Back original with consistent wear, without invasive modern interventions
