Medusa – by Iris Schoenmakers
This striking painting by artist Iris Schoenmakers is titled Medusa.
They called her Medusa, though she bore no serpents—only truth.
She stands unguarded, untouched by expectation or shame. Her body is not an invitation, but a statement: she exists on her own terms. In her presence, something shifts—not stone, but illusion.
People gave her a myth because they could not face what she revealed. She did not curse them; she stripped away what was false.

Iris Schoenmakers is recognized for her realistic painting style, defined by earthy tones and a strong sensitivity to form and atmosphere. Her work is held in private collections across the Netherlands, Germany, Bulgaria, Italy, Spain, Hungary, and beyond. She ranked 5th in the Nature contest (Progressus, May 10th, 2024) and her work has been featured in Artist Closeup Magazine.
She has exhibited internationally, including with Somnium Meum – Swiss Art Gallery in Zurich, and is a member of a Dutch artists’ association. In addition to her studio practice, she has conducted portrait drawing workshops and taught a portrait drawing course at Volksuniversiteit Eindhoven.
