Franco Mulas (1938–2023), Biografia, mixed media on paper mounted on board, 1977, 116 × 84 cm, in excellent condition, original edition, sold with frame by Galleria, Italy.
Description from the seller
This work is a piece of great intellectual fascination by Franco Mulas, one of the most significant Italian artists regarding the intersection between realism, civil commitment, and metalinguistic reflection on art.
The painting, entitled "Biografia" (Biography), is made with mixed media on paper applied to board. Although the plaque on the front reports "76", the autograph inscription on the back clarifies the dating to 1977.

Opera Analysis
• Subject and Metapainting: The work is a "picture within a picture". It depicts an easel on which rests a canvas with an anatomical sketch (a male torso with arms raised). In the foreground, on a flat surface that seems to float in space, numerous squeezed tubes of paint and brushes in a jar are scattered.
• Meaning: The title "Biografia" suggests that the artist’s life coincides with the tools of his trade. The tubes of paint are not just objects, but "traces of life" lived in the studio. The figure hinted at in the background represents the ultimate aim of painting research: the study of man.
• Style: Here Mulas employs a very cold and precise analytic realism for the objects (the tubes), contrasted with the graphic and almost unfinished stroke of the figure. This dichotomy creates a sense of suspension typical of the critical realism of the 1970s.
• Technical Details: The photos show the signature "Mulas" on the front bottom right and the autograph writings on the back: "Mulas 77 - Biografia". The condition appears excellent, with the paper well taut on the board.
• Dimensions: 50 x 70 cm the board

Franco Mulas: Biographical Notes (1938–2023)
Franco Mulas was an undisputed protagonist of Italian contemporary painting, capable of evolving from social realism to a more introspective and naturalistic painting.
• Formation: Born in Rome in 1938. He trained at the French Academy at Villa Medici and at the Free School of the Nude. His first solo show took place in 1967, the year in which he began to stand out for his ability to document the changes in society.
• Critical Realism and the ’68: Mulas became famous for painting the social ferment of 1968. His series (such as "Occidente" or "Le verifiche") analyze the myths of consumerism, political violence, and urban alienation with a language that fuses photography and painting.
• The Seventies and Metapainting: In the period when he created this work (1977), his research shifts to the "painting of painting." Mulas begins to question the meaning of making art in a world that is changing. "Biografia" belongs exactly to this moment of internal reflection within the artist’s studio.
• Later Evolution: From the 1980s onward, his painting turns toward a new naturalism, focusing on landscape and light (series such as "Finisterre"), while always maintaining that technical and conceptual rigor that has distinguished him.
• Recognitions:
o Elected Academician of San Luca.
o Participation in the Venice Biennale in 1980.
o President of the Republic Award in 1989.
• Deceased: He passed away in Rome in March 2023, leaving an artistic legacy based on coherence and technical quality.

Value of the Work
Mulas’s works from the 1970s are highly appreciated for their historical and conceptual value. This canvas, in particular, is a poetic synthesis of his thinking: the artist telling his story not through his own face, but through color matter and the act of painting.
