Dr. Franz Kottenkamp - Werke - 1851-1852

For sale is a rarely complete 14-volume collection of “Kottenkamp’s Works” in uniform, decorative bindings.
Dr. Franz Kottenkamp (1806–1858) was a well-known translator and popularizer of English scientific and historical works. This edition was published by Rieger’s Publishing House in Stuttgart around 1851/52 and includes accessible introductions to the natural sciences, physics, architecture, history, among others.
Included titles (visible on title pages and spines):
• The Creation in its Glory and its Laws (an accessible introduction to the sciences)
• Presentation of Electromagnetism (by P. M. Roget, translated by Kottenkamp)
• The Most Famous Buildings
• History of Greece, its Literature, Philosophy and Art (Wilhelm Schöttlen / Kottenkamp)

Format: Small-Octavo (about 18–20 cm), 14 volumes complete.
Binding: Decorative contemporary half-leather bindings with marbled boards, gold-lettered spines and rich ornamental spine gilding (“Kottenkamp’s Works. Volume X”). One volume with a green spine label (typical for the series).
Condition:
Used, but for a set about 170–175 years old good to fair (condition 3- to 3).
• Spine and edges rubbed, leather somewhat dry and joints lightly split (typical), corners bumped
• Gold embossing partially faded
• Inside: paper slightly browned and occasionally foxed (as with almost all copies from this period), but firm, complete and readable
• No loose pages, no major tears or missing pages
• Overall a very presentable, complete library set with a charming “old book” character
