Description from the seller

DESCRIPTION

"Male Portrait", oil on canvas, 50x40 cm with frame, 40x30 cm the canvas alone, German school, datable to the second half of the 19th century.

The painting features the effigy of an elderly man captured in a three-quarter pose against a dark and neutral background, which enhances his volume. The subject is rendered with extraordinary attention to facial details: the silvery hair, finely treated, frames a face marked by deep lines that tell of experience and dignity. The gaze, clear and directed slightly beyond the observer, together with the hint of a barely sketched smile, give the portrait significant psychological introspection. The clothing, characterized by the rigor of a dark jacket, a starched white collar, and a black bow tie, denotes the subject’s belonging to a solid bourgeois or intellectual class, typical of Central European society of the era.

Technically speaking, the work stands out for a deft brushstroke that alternates more fluid and gauzy passes in the shadow areas with more material and decisive touches in the highlights. The composition is dominated by a delicate chiaroscuro: light strikes the face laterally, shaping the forms and highlighting the texture of the skin through a warm and natural color range, in stark contrast to the coolness of the background. This approach fully aligns with the tradition of 19th-century German portraiture, which looked to masters such as Franz von Lenbach or Wilhelm Leibl as reference points for a realism that was not merely outward, but capable of probing the subject’s soul. The work testifies to that transition between academic idealism and a cruder, more modern verismo, where the almost photographic precision of the German school blends with a deep painterly sensitivity.

CONDITION REPORT
