Forest of Soignes
Oil on canvas mounted on original cardboard panel
Signed bottom right in Chinese characters and in Latin letters
Titled on the back
Dimensions: approximately 51 × 41 cm
Description
This work by Sha Qi, known in Europe under the name Sadji, depicts a landscape of the Forest of Soignes, treated in a warm, autumnal palette. The artist deploys dense painterly material, applied in thick, energetic, and expressive strokes, characteristic of his Belgian period.
The foliage vibrates thanks to a subtle layering of color ranging from deep greens to bright reds and ochers, while the surface of the water delicately reflects these masses of vegetation. The composition, structured around a tree with sinewy branches, creates a harmonious balance and a controlled visual rhythm.
This painting perfectly illustrates the stylistic search peculiar to Sadji, namely the meeting between Oriental pictorial sensibility and Western oil painting techniques. Both energetic and lyrical, the landscape treatment highlights the singularity of his work.
The canvas, marouflaged on its original cardboard support, bears two signatures — in Chinese and in Latin alphabet — confirming the authenticity of the artist's hand. The title Forest of Soignes, inscribed on the back, provides a geographic precision appreciated by collectors of Belgian landscapes.
