Description from the seller
Ratilly stoneware pitcher / Jeanne and Norbert Pierlot 1970s.
Jeanne and Norbert Pierlot are prominent figures in French 20th-century ceramics. Jeanne Boutet de Monvel (1917–1988), a potter by training, opened her first workshop in Paris in 1943, where she worked earthenware and created decorative objects. Norbert Pierlot (1919–1979), initially an actor, turned to ceramics after meeting Jeanne. They married in 1948 and together acquired the Château de Ratilly in 1951, which they transformed into a center for pottery, ceramics, and contemporary art. Their work is characterized by clean lines, utilitarian and decorative pieces in white-glazed stoneware, often signed with an owl, the symbol of their workshop.
The couple played a pioneering role in making Ratilly a meeting place for artists and in organizing exhibitions, workshops and cultural events. After Norbert’s death in 1979, Jeanne continued their artistic heritage and founded a choir in 1980, while continuing to run the site until her death in 1988.
Their work marked the history of modern ceramics in France, blending tradition and innovation, and their workshop remained a place of creation and transmission for decades.
