An ancient painting depicting Venus and Adonis. This oil-on-panel painting of Venus and Adonis, from a Roman School of the 17th century, tells the tragic love story between the goddess of beauty and a young hunter of otherworldly beauty, born of Cupid's arrow’s sting. Despite Venus’s warnings, Adonis dies during a hunting trip because of a boar (sometimes linked to Ares’s jealousy), transforming into a flower. Size: 64.5 × 54.5 cm.
