One-of-a-kind handcrafted metal candelabrum from Upper Silesia, Poland, dating to the 1950s–1970s, made of magnetic copper-plated steel with a blackened patina, in fair condition.
Description from the seller
One-of-a-kind Handcrafted Silesian Metalwork – Mid-Century "Iron Curtain" Art – Provenance: Ruda Śląska
The Mystery of Time and Origin
This candelabra is a rare collector's artifact from the industrial heart of Poland—Upper Silesia (Ruda Śląska). While its exact birth date remains a mystery, as the children of the previous owner could not provide a specific year, oral history and collector’s expertise place it between the 1950s and 1970s. It has been cherished by only three owners:
• 1st Owner: Passed away 20 years ago (aged 80–90).
• 2nd Owner: Passed away last year (also aged 80–90).
• 3rd Owner: Currently in the hands of a collector who received it directly from the family.
A Unique Craftsmanship
The piece represents the Post-War Historicism movement within Polish Metalwork (Metaloplastyka). It blends traditional Baroque-inspired forms with the raw, brutalist honesty of industrial materials. The core is made of solid, magnetic steel, meticulously copper-plated and finished with a blackened (oxidized) patina. The central stem shows clear signs of being turned on a lathe, while the arms are hand-welded and joined using a screw-assembly – typical for bespoke workshop craftsmanship of the era.
Provenance & History:
The item boasts a moving oral history. I am only the third owner; it was passed down through generations of women in a single family from Ruda Śląska. This continuity ensures its authenticity and status as a cherished household relic rather than a flea-market find.
Condition & Authenticity:
The candelabra is preserved in an "as found," honest vintage state.
• Authentic Patina: Significant verdigris (green patina) is visible on one arm, certifying the age of the copper plating.
• Surface: Other parts show wear that may be a result of original artistic styling or decades of polishing and handling – a mystery that adds to its charm.
• Vibe: Minor metal spotting, traces of wax, and surface oxidation on the base are not defects, but a "noble skin" that confirms itsc.a 50/70-year history. It has never been renovated, preserving its full historical value.
Material & Artistic Finish
The piece is made of metal (non-heavy, attracts magnets) with a copper-plated and blackened finish. The distinctive rubbing and exposed copper may be a deliberate stylistic choice of the creator or a result of decades of use—this ambiguity adds a layer of intrigue for the connoisseur.
Condition: "Honest Patina"
This item is offered in its authentic, uncleaned state to preserve its soul. It features Honest Patina:
• Visible verdigris (green patina) on one of the arms.
• Authentic wax remnants and spotting.
• Surface oxidation on the base.
These are not defects but a "biography" of the object, proving its age and long history of domestic use.
Technical Specs:
• Dimensions: Width 32 cm, Height 24 cm, Base 13 cm.
• Weight: Approx. 800–900g.
• Material: Metal (magnetic).
• Uniqueness: No markings/signatures (typical for Polish artisan metalwork pre-1990).
