Description from the seller
Petrus van der Velden Rotterdam 1837 - 1915 Christchurch (New Zealand)
The painter Petrus van der Velden, born in Rotterdam (1837), began his artistic career as an employee at a printing house. However, his heart lay in painting, and in 1868 he enrolled at the Rotterdam Art Academy. He worked in Berlin, Normandy, and Dordrecht. From 1870 to 1873 he worked mainly in Marken, where he depicted various facets of the hard life of fishermen. His work is very akin to that of his great colleagues from the Hague School and the Laren School. Thus, Petrus van der Velden, among others, had a very good connection with the painter Jozef Israels. As a painter, Petrus van der Velden was also successful in the Netherlands. After Marken he lived in Rotterdam and The Hague. In 1890 he left for New Zealand with his wife and three children. The trip to New Zealand was made at the invitation of Gerrit van Asch, who lived near Christchurch on the South Island. Around 1892 he undertook a six-month painting trip to the Otari Gorge. Here he gathered the material for his most beautiful New Zealand paintings. From 1898 to 1905 Petrus van der Velden stayed in Sydney (Australia) with varying success. He returned to Wellington weakened. In 1913 he intended to settle in Auckland but died there of a heart attack.
