Hardcover with a brown cloth cover, with a label on the cover and raised lettering on the spine.
German illustrated edition of this Voltaire tale, magnificently illustrated with 26 line drawings by Paul Klee.
Light rubbing and wear on the covers and binding. The cloth binding has a small tear in the center. Pen inscription on the front cover.
The paper is clean, the text and illustrations are clear, and the binding is solid. Overall, a very elegant copy in very good condition.
Rare and beautiful copy of the only book illustrated by Klee.
“A comparison of the pen drawings with the text reveals the very personal character of Klee’s illustrations. This flowing line, which brushes the pages like a light breath, is particularly marked in the Candide illustrations. It is not found anywhere else in the artist’s later work” (Lang, p. 51).
