Kutani Ware Set of 8 Sake Cups (Sakazuki / Choko) — Shichi Fukujin, the Seven Gods of Good Fortune — Gold Interior with Polychrome Overglaze Enamel Painting, Sometsuke Exterior, Kutani Seal Mark
A charming and auspicious set of eight small sake cups (sakazuki / o-choko) in Kutani-yaki porcelain, each hand-painted with one of the Shichi Fukujin — the Seven Gods of Good Fortune beloved in Japanese culture. The set is presented in its original gift box.
Kutani ware (Kutani-yaki) is one of Japan's most celebrated ceramic traditions, originating in 1655 in the village of Kutani in Ishikawa Prefecture during the early Edo period. Produced under the patronage of the Kaga Domain's Maeda clan, it became renowned for its bold, luminous overglaze enamel painting — a tradition encapsulated in the saying "Kutani does not exist apart from its painting." The characteristic five-colour palette of green, red, yellow, purple and blue, together with lavish gold application, gives Kutani ware an opulence and vibrancy unmatched among Japanese ceramics.
Each cup in this set is decorated on the interior with a luxurious burnished gold ground, upon which a figure from the Shichi Fukujin is painted in vivid polychrome overglaze enamels. The seven deities — Ebisu (god of fishing and commerce), Daikokuten (god of wealth), Bishamonten (god of warriors), Benzaiten (goddess of everything that flows), Fukurokuju (god of wisdom and longevity), Hotei (god of contentment), and Jurojin (god of longevity) — each appear in their traditional attributes and robes, rendered with the expressive brushwork characteristic of Kutani enamel painting. The exterior of each cup is decorated in cobalt blue sometsuke (underglaze blue) with delicate landscape, bamboo, and floral motifs, creating a pleasing contrast between the lush golden interiors and the refined blue-and-white exteriors. Each cup bears a red square "Kutani" seal mark on the base.
The Shichi Fukujin are among the most beloved symbols of good fortune in Japan, traditionally believed to bring happiness, prosperity, long life, and success. A set of Shichi Fukujin sake cups makes an ideal gift for celebrations, weddings, anniversaries, or any auspicious occasion, and also functions beautifully as a decorative collector's piece.
Presented in original gift box.
