Karl Lagasse, a renowned artist, gained fame in 2009 with his One Dollar sculptures and, in the same year, according to Artprice, was among the ten best sculptors under 30. In 2012, the New York magazine Farameh named him in its book FOR WHICH IT STANDS: Americana in Contemporary Art as one of the fifty best contemporary artists inspired by traditional US idols. In 2016, Karl was warmly congratulated by the President of the French Republic at the Art Paris Art Fair for his impressive two‑meter Bronze sculpture One Dollar exhibited at the Grand Palais.
Karl began his artistic journey at age 7 with collages, sparked by meeting sculptor César Baldaccini. Later he turned to tagging and graffiti in the Paris Metro, yet retained a passion for collages. The artist Yvaral Vasarely encouraged him to merge his tags with his collages. In 2003 Karl prepared his first exhibition in Paris, which led to his first solo show in 2006 at the Isy Brachot Gallery in Brussels. In 2008 he returned to Paris with an exhibition combining painting, sculpture, and video elements at the Espace Pierre Cardin.
Karl particularly enjoys presenting his works at international exhibitions. In 2011 he represented Cryptogram One with Bel Air Fine Art Gallery at Art Monaco. The following year he presented his One Dollar works on the theme “In God We Trust” at the Artco France gallery. His solo exhibition in 2016 at the Atrium Gallery in Marbella, Spain was opened by the mayor, who praised his works to the international press.
In 2010 he was selected to represent Deauville at the Horsemania world championship in Lexington, where he created a horse sculpture for the event. In 2012 he offered Deauville his Cryptogram One sculpture, a symbolic bronze for peace and love, placed at the city’s entrance. In the same year, in collaboration with Corbis, he erected a monumental sculpture for the Cannes Festival, based on photos from 1945 to 2011, signed by personalities such as Alexandra Lamy and Matthew McConaughey.
The artist rose to fame in 2009 with his “One Dollar” sculptures and secured a place among the world’s leading sculptors under 30 according to Artprice.
In 2017 he was chosen to design trophies for the 43rd American Film Festival. Inspired by Cryptogram One, he designed a polished aluminum alloy trophy with messages such as “Hope,” “7th Art,” and “Deauville” on its four sides. For the 46th edition in 2020, Karl Lagasse was commissioned to create a new trophy inspired by a Deauville emblem: the drawing of the barriers that separate the stalls on the boards.
In 2016 France Culture mentioned Karl in an article about his monumental installation A Piece of Heaven on Earth, depicting a Maserati wrapped in white foil and a Jesus statue, surrounded by dollar-shaped sculptures, symbolizing human indebtedness. This work was presented in 2015 at the Art Paris Art Fair in collaboration with Maserati. In 2017 he created the Trophy for the Deauville American Film Festival, based on his Cryptogram One piece and featuring messages like “Hope” and “7th Art” on the trophies.
