Description from the seller
Caithness Glass Paperweight, “Flower in the Rain”, A20262
Offered is an heirloom piece, purchased in Scotland in the 1980s.
The design: "Flower in the Rain" was originally designed in the early 1970s (around 1974) by designer Jack Allan. It became a staple of the manufactory and was produced for decades in various colors (blue, violet, red, yellow).
Symbolism: The controlled air bubbles in the glass are meant to represent raindrops surrounding a flower that grows inside.
Technique: The flower is formed using the so-called lampwork technique, while the bubbles are precisely set into the glass mass with a special lattice tool.
Motif: At the center is a stylized violet flower (a clematis or fantasy bloom) with green leaves. The inner work is described as “lampwork,” where glass rods are shaped over a flame before they are melted into the clear glass.
A classic of Scottish glass art from the 80s/90s, designed after a famous design by Jack Allan.
The "Rain" effect: The name “Rain” in the file name refers to the uniform air bubbles (Controlled Bubbles) that surround the flower. This technique is produced using a special dotted lattice tool that presses indentations into the hot glass mass, trapping air when covered with another layer of glass. The timeless piece perfectly demonstrates Caithness’s technical mastery in handling air inclusions.
Base mark: Real Caithness pieces almost always have an engraving on the underside – in this case: ‘Caithness – FLOWER IN THE RAIN – Scotland.’ There is also the production number listed there as a serial or model code – here the number A20262.
A-series: Numbers beginning with an "A" are commonly found on unlimited editions from later production phases or on special batches for export or certain dealers.
Dating: The design was introduced in 1974, but the offered piece with a five-digit number prefixed with an "A" likely comes from later production (circa 1980s or 1990s).
Dimensions: Diameter: approx. 7.0 cm, Height: approx. 7.5 cm, Weight: 554 g
Condition: Excellent condition – no scratches or chips.
