Description from the seller
Rare collection of the five legal codes of the Kingdom of France during the Restoration: the Civil Code, the Code of Procedure, the Commercial Code, the Code of Criminal Instruction, and the Penal Code -
The Five Codes of the French Empire is the set of laws governing uniformly civil law in France, drawn up by order of Napoleon Bonaparte from 1800 to 1804. Thirty-six laws were successively promulgated from March to May 1803 and from January to March 1804. -
Then, the finished work, the law of 30 ventôse An XII (21 March 1804) united all these laws into a single body, which under the title of Code Civil des Français contained 2,281 articles. It constitutes one of the most important elements of the Napoleonic legislative reform project and was to become the best vehicle for the principles of 1789 across Europe conquered by Napoleon's armies, who had become Emperor -
Bonaparte, having become Napoleon, will prize his title of legislator: “My true glory is not to have won forty battles; Waterloo will erase the memory of so many victories; what nothing will erase, what will live forever, is my Civil Code” -
